UNLOCKING THE BEST WAY TO TRAVEL! #EuropeSeries
I met a friend named Tim while travelling alone in Thailand last year, and we kept in touch ever since. When I told him I’m travelling through Germany, he invited me to visit his home; Breckerfeld.
Visiting his small village in Germany was a unique experience that I would’ve never had if it weren't for the strong connection we’d built in Thailand. The village was nothing extraordinary, in fact, none of my other German friends had even heard of it- but witnessing normal life, going to the supermarket, and hiking through the forest in his backyard, felt so fulfilling.
I realized that this is the true meaning of travelling - seeing a place through the eyes of a local, eating food together with their family, and learning a few German words to communicate with everyone. DAS IST GUT!
These experiences provide the perfect setting for an alternative vision of ourselves that’s crowned with an extraordinary existence. Munching on some delicious German bread and homemade apple pie in a small German town, our runaway minds can freely ask: What if? That's the beauty of travel.
The experience was authentic and gave me a sense of belonging that I don't often find when travelling to tourist hotspots. It was super fun to observe the “German quirks” around his house; how his dad loved building miniature train towns, how he had a canoe stored in his basement, and how they organized their vacation albums with a mad level of German efficiency!
So, next time you plan a trip, I encourage you to connect with locals and travel with them. It may not be as glamorous as staying in a five-star hotel or taking a fancy cruise, but it will be more authentic, and you'll come back with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.
